Where are the fans?
So here’s the thing, this particular blurt out or blog if you will I have no statistics or facts or breakdowns from news stories, other bloggers, or any shit like that. I’m using the ol’ Eye Ball Test… meaning this is what I see.
We at the podcast, we enjoy the privilege and pleasure of working with tons of artists from all over, we talk to and meet some incredible people. We even started working the show scene with our “Promoter Team” and started setting up shows working in the New England area.
Aside from what we are directly involved in, we watch and check in on the groups that we connect with and new groups we have yet to connect with ALL THE TIME! Which is why I propose the question…. WHERE ARE THE FANS??
Local shows from all over… try to keep the social media experience involved, you have to this day and age if you’re not a Social Media Giant might as well be dead in this new world; I notice lots of these photos and vids, very few are focusing on the venue and turnout, WHY You may ask? Prob because the attendance numbers to put it blunt, SUCK. Is it because the bands are bad? NO! I have seen, met, witness, and promoted some of the best talent out there! Incredible stuff! WHERE ARE THE FANS?!?
Secondly, (that might not be a word, but hey… find professional writing elsewhere) Have you ever noticed that anytime you ARE at a show, you meet and mingle with some locals, everyone at that show is in a band.. HAHA … just throwing it out there in regular convo, “Ya I know Justin, he used to be the guitar player in the band I’m currently in…. We are about to drop an EP, it’s huge, we will be on tour with Devildriver next month…” I have a hard time remembering the last time I had a conversation with someone at an event (Local and National mind you) where the person willing to engage in any form of conversation isn’t a Musician themselves!
So I ask yet again, WHERE ARE THE FANS?!?! It can’t be humanly possible that every interaction in front of a loud ass PA speaker only happens in the presence of the next Metal God of the future? Someone other than those of us critiquing the show based on our own stage performance and guitar rig set up is attending a display of glorious heavy metal music?
Did we forget the reason for live performances? Now, once upon a time LIVE music was the only way to get your kicks and listen, you know when records and 8 tracks weren’t so readily mobile and avail by asking Siri… BUT!! Live performances are the Real experience. You go see a movie at THE MOVIES for High Definition sound and Picture performance. Live performances are the SAME thing! High definition sound quality not attainable through Apple Ear Pods or Sony walkmans…. The true quality performance can only be attained through a sound system wired and geared to handle the db’s. Plus the energy… Can’t forget the energy, and shit if it catches your fancy (it certainly tickle mine!) … Lights! Blinking flashy blasts of high output voltage!
I fear for a world where local music venues die off because we are so saturated in the market like a Dunkin Donuts in Massachusetts… because with saturation follows closure. No more local venue. Consider this… I hear that people don’t like the amount a cover is for a small venue, 8 to 10 bucks? Yikes right??? But … a national headliner will demand 100-150 for a stadium show and hit ya for a 300 percent merch mark up and the venue has you take out a small mortgage to afford a beer and hotdog, and heaven forbid a water so you don’t die of thirst mid mosh. Give me the 8 dollar cover to see a killer talented band, selling merch for 10 bucks a Tee … throw in another 5 for the EP and 4 bucks a drink, 5 if you’re a mixer. Thats a 40 dollar night out with a good buzz and prize to take home. If you’re not into the cover, just remember, us promoters set these covers to take care of the overhead for the venue, that’s the bartender, the space, the door dude making sure no snot bags sneak in with fake ID’s, and a sound guy that’s trained to make you awesome.. If that cover gets smaller and the numbers don’t show, that’s another band that doesn’t get paid that night… “But they are out there for exposure man…” Tell that to their practice spaces and gas tanks… me must get back together everywhere in this world… and remember… LIVE MUSIC MATTERS!
So I ask ONE FINAL TIME, where are the fans….
